I want to foster an awareness of conditions suffered by South Africans who resorted to creating make shift shelter, optimizing outside space using left over metal, tires, stones any scraps to assemble their homes. Fashioning my art as homage to my ancestors, my family and my community, it is a constant reminder of the struggle suffered daily by the average black South African. Listening to the stories, the pictures paint scenes of families and communities who overcame adversity and have progressed into the 21st century. My art tells a story of the universality of poverty. The differing reactions and the variety of deductions concerning the location of these shanties are a constant reminder of the fight to eliminate world poverty and implement fair trade.
